The Universal Stellar Mass–stellar Metallicity Relation for Dwarf Galaxies
We present spectroscopic metallicities of individual stars in seven gas-rich dwarf irregular galaxies (dIrrs), and we show that dIrrs obey the same mass–metallicity relation as the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) satellites of both the Milky Way and M31: Z∗ ∝ M 0.30±0.02 ∗ . The uniformity of the relation is in contradiction to previous estimates of metallicity based on photometry. This relationship is...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملThe Stellar Mass Evolution of Galaxies in the NICMOS Ultra Deep Field
We measure the build-up of the stellar mass of galaxies from z = 6 to z = 1. Using 15 band multicolor imaging data in the NICMOS Ultra Deep Field we derive photometric redshifts and masses for 796 galaxies down to HAB = 26.5. The derived evolution of the global stellar mass density of galaxies is consistent with previous star formation rate density measurements over the observed range of redshi...
متن کاملStellar Mass Loss-driven Wind Models of Elliptical Galaxies?
Recent claims in the literature (Bressan, Chiosi & Fagotto 1994) that the epoch describing the onset of galactic winds in spheroidal star systems has been severely overestimated in the past, due to the neglect of energy deposited in the interstellar medium from stellar winds, is evaluated in the light of a more conservative approach to mod-eling the input of thermal energy to the system from ma...
متن کاملResolved stellar mass maps of galaxies. I: method and implications for global mass estimates
We introduce a novel technique to construct spatially resolved maps of stellar mass surface density in galaxies based on optical and near IR imaging. We use optical/NIR colour(s) to infer effective stellar mass-to-light ratios (M/L) at each pixel, which are then multiplied by the surface brightness to obtain the local stellar surface mass density. We build look-up tables to express M/L as a fun...
